This is Nick’s story… “When I initially moved to Highlands, I didn’t know much about Monmouth County. It was a different New Jersey- a ‘new’ New Jersey if you will (bad joke). For me, going back to college post USMC seemed daunting, but Brookdale made that easy. The faculty was very kind and helpful. I didn’t register for classes until the day prior to the start of the Spring semester. Shannen Deptula was a massive help! I’d say the virtual learning setting was different from what I was used to, but at the same time, it was a good experience as professors did very well to make the classroom setting feel authentic! My intended major is Economics.

The last year has been a challenge for all of us in many ways. For me, it was figuring out what life’s greater purpose was after leaving the Marine Corps. In all the uncertainty that followed, I thought of the Marines I met along the way and how they all impacted my life for the better.

One of those individuals was the sort of person that really would take the shirt off his back for you. James Currie was always there for anyone he encountered, whether that was a 24-hour duty post, a bad day after work, or a long day in the field. Sadly, James passed away May 3, 2020. His loss echoed throughout our battalion, and sadly, due to the circumstances of the pandemic, many could not bid him a proper farewell.

A few months ago I decided to embark on a solo cross country bicycle ride to help raise awareness on the mental health crisis that veterans and active-duty members are facing every day. With permission from the family, we have partnered with The Wounded Warrior Project. Their mission statement is to honor and empower our veterans, service members, and their families by getting them the help they need with 0 out of pocket costs to them. Their services range from mental health programs, employment, education, and job training, and much more. The entirety of this trip is self-funded and 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the Wounded Warrior Project.” #SoulsOfBrookdale
