Chhange Welcomes New Director

Sara E. Brown, Ph.D. was named the new executive director of The Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education (Chhange) at Brookdale Community College.

“I am thrilled to have Sara lead and guide us into the next lifecycle of Chhange,” said Howard Dorman, Chhange’s board president. “I am the child of Holocaust survivors and am excited to have Sara teach this history, guiding future generations to become upstanders and to effect positive change.”

Brown earned her Ph.D. in comparative genocide studies from Clark University’s Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Her experience includes managing post-secondary education programming for University of Southern California Shoah Foundation and teaching courses on human rights and mass violence at San Diego State University.

“I am honored to join the Chhange family and have big shoes to fill!” said Brown. ”I look forward to building on the work of Dale Daniels, our first executive director, and to continue the legacy of our founders, Dr. Sy Siegler, Jack Needle and Norma Klein.”

Established in 1979, Chhange’s mission is to educate about the Holocaust, genocide, and human rights; promote the elimination of racism, antisemitism, and all forms of prejudice; and develop creative programs regarding these crucial human issues. Chhange sponsors 50-75 programs each year, reaching more than 25,000 students, educators, and community members. Chhange’s permanent exhibit Journeys Beyond Genocide: The Human Experience, features the human story behind the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda and a section titled Stand Up for Human Rights.
