Student Employment
Student employment positions offer the opportunity for students to hold on-campus employment to further develop their career readiness competencies through “real-life” application and supervisor mentorship. Brookdale Community College student employees can also actively reflect on these competencies by participating in career readiness workshops and competency-specific discussion boards within the Student Employment Program Canvas shell.
Student Employment Eligibility:
- Maintain good academic standing and at least a 2.0 GPA
- Enrollment in a degree-seeking program
- Registered for a minimum of 6 credits *For Federal Work Student students, you must be registered for and maintain an enrollment status of half time (six-degree credits). Courses taken that are not part of your degree do not count toward your eligibility for federal student aid.
- Offered Federal Work-Study (Only required for FWS funded positions)
Note: Student employment positions are competitive and employment is at the discretion of the hiring supervisor.
Student Help vs. Federal Work-Study
The main difference between a Federal Work-Study (FWS) and a Student Help (SH) classification is where your student employment payment earnings originate. Student Help positions are funded through a department’s budget and all eligible students with or without a FWS award can apply. Federal Work-Study position funding is earned through a student’s financial aid award and students must have been awarded FWS in order to apply. If a student is not sure if they are FWS eligible, they should contact Brookdale’s Financial Aid office. All students are encouraged to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually to determine Federal Work-Study eligibility.

Newly hired student employees must contact the Career Center for an orientation and to complete a Student Employment Agreement form. A student cannot work without a current agreement in place. All agreements end every academic year and may be voided if student eligibility requirements are not maintained. If you are not sure if you have a current agreement in place contact career@brookdalecc.edu.
