Did Rome fall? Ancient Rome actually had three stages: a monarchy, a republic, and then an empire. How did each fail and transform into the next stage? Join us for the unknown stories as well as for lessons for today. Look at how Rome began with kings, dictators and clans. Learn how the republic was created, growing into an empire, and follow its descent into chaos. Finally, explore the classic explanations of the rise and fall of Rome and discover what lessons we can learn from Rome today.

Thomas Paine & King George III

In 1775, John Adams estimated that a third of colonists were patriots, a third Loyalists, and a third undecided. In January 1776, Thomas Paine’s Common Sense spoke directly to that uncertain middle, challenging hereditary rule and portraying King George III as a central force of oppression. As revolution unfolded, Paine’s vision of representative government stood in sharp contrast to the monarchy. In this course, examine both Paine’s influential pamphlet and the King’s decrees to better understand the competing ideas that shaped the era.
