Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows F-1 students to engage in an off-campus internship/practicum, which is a required and integral component of their academic program. Optional internships do not qualify. Examples of training opportunities are: work/study, internship, externship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum, including clinicals.
Review your program requirements and consult an academic advisor if needed. We recommend that you plan for your CPT experience at least one semester in advance. CPT must be completed before graduation. Students enrolled in ESL are not eligible for CPT.
Follow the placement procedures established by your Academic Department and/or the Career Center. You may be required to secure a placement site and provide supporting documentation.
Programs with Required Department-Assigned Placements: Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Radiologic Technology, Hospitality, Culinary, Education, and Pre-Social Work. Consult your instructors regarding internship, practicum, or clinical placements.
Students enrolled full-time may participate in part-time CPT (20 hours per week or less). Full-time CPT (more than 20 hours per week) is generally available during summer or winter terms when students are not enrolled full-time. Students who accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT become ineligible for post-completion OPT. Part-time CPT does not affect OPT eligibility.
The Application Process:
- Review your eligibility and program requirements in the academic catalog or consult with an academic advisor.
- Obtain the documentation required for your training opportunity (such as an offer letter, internship agreement, placement confirmation, practicum assignment, or department-approved documentation).
- Receive approval from the Academic Department/Career Center and register for the required internship course.
- Upon receiving approval, submit your documentation and the I-20 Request Form to the International Education Center (IEC).
- An IEC staff member will issue an I-20 Form with CPT authorization, typically within one week.
Some students with CPT authorization may be eligible to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN). Consult with the IEC before taking up any employment. If eligible, IEC staff will advise you on how to obtain the SSN. It is your responsibility to comply with all immigration regulations.
