At the Continuing and Professional Studies (CPS) Completion Ceremony on Wednesday, June 5th, the achievements of students who completed healthcare training, business training, information technology, career and technical education, online certification, small business development training, displaced homemakers, horticulture, GED, and medical training were celebrated.

“For those of you who want to be really marketable, having both a degree and an industry credential makes you incredibly valuable,” said Joan Ali Scocco, dean of CPS. “I am encouraging you for this to be the beginning of your credentialing academic career,” added Scocco. She explained that all CPS students who filled out a Brookdale credit application that night would be granted a CPS scholarship to cover the cost of the application fee.

“We have an overarching mission of transforming lives,” said Dr. David Stout, president of Brookdale. “If there is one place where we can see the examples of transforming lives, that’s right here in the products of continuing and professional studies division.”

“I am so proud of the students for finishing the various career development programs offered by our distinguished Brookdale Community College which has produced well rounded, intellectual graduates for many years,” said Monmouth County Freeholder Lillian G. Burry. She shared her own story of enrolling in a Brookdale real estate course more than 40 years after having earned her bachelors and masters degrees in history and political science. “I now own a real estate agency. In fact, I’ve had it for over 40 years now,” Burry said. “What you’re doing here today will open up new avenues for you,” she said.

“It is my honor and privilege to be here with you and to experience your success,” said Freeholder Susan M. Kiley to the students and their families. She encouraged students to believe in themselves and to set goals. “Know what you are striving for and you will surely achieve it,” said Kiley.

That sentiment was echoed by Sandra Carr, who completed the horticulture program, in her speech. “There is always an avenue for success. You just have to believe in yourself,” she said.
