On Thursday, August 17th from 4-6 PM, Brookdale Community College held an Ice Cream Social outside of the Bankier Library. The Mr. Softee ice cream truck at the edge of the lawn was a huge hit. People roamed with their desserts and were able to visit multiple departments at the tents lining the pathways. Students and parents met with representatives from each subject, got a glimpse into their programs, and learned more about life at Brookdale.

Many of the tables had more information and provided items such as flyers for visitors to take home. Some displays went a step further, such as the psychology and addiction studies/human services departments, in which they had a colorful model of the human brain. The history department held a free raffle, and those who correctly answered a history question were entered to win a $100 Brookdale bookstore gift certificate. At the fashion and marketing tent, there were two mannequins that showcased work by Brookdale students, as well as information about their fashion shows, fashion club, and study abroad opportunities. The sociology, anthropology, and human geography department had different representations of culture in human history. Eastern Woodland Native American artifacts represented the past, and there were also fabrics on display representing both the diversity of cultures and how culture is interconnected through shared aspects such as clothing.

Many other departments were also represented at the Ice Cream Social, including: nursing, political science, criminal justice, education, liberal arts, communication media, culinary arts, computer science, music technology, game design, social media, and more. There were also tables for Brookdale’s honors program, financial aid, and admissions.

Prospective students Julia Kelly and Savana Siver look forward to a fresh start exploring everything at Brookdale. “In general I feel like it’s good to just, like, scope out, like, what you’re interested in,” said Kelly. She thought that the Brookdale Ice Cream Social was a great way to “get introduced to everything” and figure things out.

“I know both of us needed, like, a little bit of guidance,” explained Siver. She also believed that the Ice Cream Social was helpful in getting advice about classes, programs, etc. by speaking to someone in-person versus on the phone. “I didn’t know Brookdale had all of these, like, programs and stuff, so it’s really interesting to, like, go see them.”

The Brookdale Ice Cream Social inspired conversation between future students and Brookdale faculty, and it showed exactly how many opportunities people can take part in. Learn more about what is offered at Brookdale and register for fall here.
