LINCROFT, NJ (Feb. 3, 2016) – Noted activist and author the Rev. Dr. Bernard Lafayette Jr. will meet with local students and discuss his experience as a core leader of the 1960’s civil rights movement during a free talk at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft at 11:30 am on Feb. 23.

One of the original Freedom Riders and a cofounder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Lafayette endured riots, fire bombings and multiple arrests while fighting for civil rights in Alabama and Tennessee in the 1960’s.

He directed the SNCC’s voter registration drive in Alabama in 1962 and was appointed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to be national program administrator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1968. He also served as national coordinator of the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign. His book, “In Peace and Freedom: My Journey in Selma,” was published in 2013.

Lafayette’s talk, titled “Your Life: A Celebration of Peace and Social Justice Yesterday and Today,” is free and open to the public.
