Tyler Sims "Anakin" Esports CardBrookdale Community College Esports standout Tyler Sims, known in the competitive gaming world as Anakin, has officially committed to play for Cumberland University’s varsity Esports team on a full scholarship. Sims will join the Tennessee-based team, known as the Rivals, this fall, where he’ll continue his rise through the collegiate Esports ranks while completing his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

For Sims, the scholarship offer represents the payoff of years of dedication to gaming and teamwork. “I’ve been playing video games since I could hold a controller,” he said. ““It feels great to see all the time I’ve put in pay off with something this big,” he said.”

Sims has been a foundational member of Brookdale’s Esports program since its early days, helping establish the college’s competitive Overwatch team and playing a key role in shaping its culture. “It was exciting to help establish something new. We played in all these tournaments, grew together as players and people. A lot of late nights, and a lot of fun.”

Brookdale Esports Director Chris Boehmer played an essential role in fostering the team’s growth and providing a platform for Sims and his teammates to excel. “Chris gave us the freedom to pursue new tournaments and really challenge ourselves,” said Sims. “Even though NJCAAE competition didn’t always push us, we branched out, joining national leagues and traveling to big tournaments in places like Ohio. We ended up ranking in the top 32 teams nationally, which is insane for a two-year college.”

Sims’ competitive success and strategic versatility—playing tank, damage, and eventually support roles—helped propel him to the national stage. He’ll now bring that talent to Marvel Rivals, a fast-rising team-based game likened to Overwatch but set in the Marvel universe. At Cumberland, Sims will serve as a strategist and support player, roles that match his high-level game sense and leadership.

Esports, Tyler Sims“Cumberland’s program is top tier,” Sims noted. “They’ve got more than 100 players competing across titles, amazing facilities, and they’re one of the most competitive programs in the country. It’s the perfect place to keep growing.”

Brookdale prepared him not just as a player, but as a student. While Sims was stacking tournament wins, he also completed his associate degree in business administration. “My classes did a great job prepping me,” he said. “I’m ready to finish my degree while continuing to level up in Esports.”Esports duo

Looking ahead, Sims is excited to compete in national leagues, make a name for himself in the collegiate scene, and maybe even go pro. “That would be cool,” he said. “It’s not a necessity, but if I keep improving and make content on the side—streaming, YouTube—that could open even more doors.”

As for advice to future Brookdale gamers? “Be consistent and keep a growth mindset. Don’t worry about winning or losing—just focus on improving. That’s what really matters.”

Sims also credits Brookdale with launching his collegiate Esports career on solid footing. “I couldn’t have asked for a better start,” he said. “Brookdale gave me the platform, the support, and the opportunities. I’m incredibly grateful.”

And while he’s now Tennessee-bound, Brookdale will be cheering him on from afar, celebrating one of its own as he proves that passion, skill, and perseverance in Esports can lead not just to championships, but to college degrees fully paid for by doing what you love.
