Brookdale’s popular Science Mondays series continues this spring with an engaging look at one of New Jersey’s most vital coastal industries—oyster aquaculture. On Monday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m., the College will welcome Samuel Ratcliff of Rutgers University’s Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory for a timely and informative presentation.
Titled “Oyster Breeding Program at the Rutgers Cape Shore Laboratory,” the talk will explore how scientists are advancing disease-resistant oyster lines and developing innovative breeding techniques to support both environmental sustainability and the regional shellfish industry. Attendees will also learn how aquaculture contributes to healthier coastal ecosystems, including improved water quality and habitat restoration.
Ratcliff, Operations Manager and Researcher at the Rutgers Cape Shore Laboratory, brings a wealth of hands-on experience in aquaculture and marine science. His work spans a variety of species—from finfish to bivalves—and reflects a deep commitment to sustainable practices and coastal ecology. In his role, he oversees daily operations, mentors students, and coordinates research initiatives that support both scientific advancement and New Jersey’s commercial shellfish sector.
Located along the Delaware Bay in Cape May, the Rutgers Cape Shore Laboratory serves as a field station of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. The facility includes advanced hatchery space and offers paid summer internships, providing students with valuable, real-world research experience.
This installment of Science Mondays offers a unique opportunity for students, faculty, and community members to connect with cutting-edge research happening right here in New Jersey—and to better understand the science behind a thriving and environmentally impactful industry.
