Stephen Acquaviva, Police Lieutenant at Rutgers University and Criminal Justice Instructor at Brookdale Community College, has been sworn in as President of the New Jersey College and University Public Safety Association (NJCUPSA) for the 2025–2026 term. The ceremony took place on Wednesday, June 11, marking a major milestone in Acquaviva’s career and reaffirming Brookdale’s involvement in statewide campus safety leadership.
“It is a great honor to be selected by law enforcement professionals across New Jersey to lead this incredible organization,” said Acquaviva. “I’m grateful for the trust of my peers and look forward to advancing our mission to support safe, secure, and welcoming campuses across the state.”
NJCUPSA serves as the leading authority on campus safety in New Jersey, representing more than 1,800 police and security professionals from nearly 40 institutions of higher education. Founded in 1973, the organization brings together professionals from colleges, universities, and partnering law enforcement agencies to share best practices, strengthen training, and enhance campus safety initiatives statewide.
Brookdale Community College is an active member of NJCUPSA and benefits from a close partnership with the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Shaun Golden. The Sheriff’s Office provides essential oversight and support to Brookdale’s campus, and is now also part of NJCUPSA, reinforcing regional cooperation in public safety.
“Stephen’s leadership role in NJCUPSA reflects his commitment to education, service, and professional excellence,” said David M. Stout, PhD, President of Brookdale Community College. “As both a law enforcement leader and educator, he is uniquely positioned to shape the future of campus public safety in New Jersey.”
Through monthly meetings, NJCUPSA provides a platform for professionals to discuss emerging trends, review legislation, and collaborate on public safety challenges affecting New Jersey’s more than 400,000 college students. The association also works closely with the International Association of College Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA), local and state partners, and the private sector.
With Acquaviva at the helm, NJCUPSA is expected to continue strengthening cross-agency coordination and enhancing training for public safety personnel, further solidifying New Jersey’s leadership in campus security nationwide.
