Brookdale Hires New Vice President for Learning

LINCROFT, NJ (May 20, 2015) – Brookdale Community College officials have selected Matthew Reed, Ph.D., as the college’s new vice president for learning.

Reed, current vice president for academic affairs at Holyoke Community College in Massachusetts, previously served as a dean with the County College of Morris in Randolph and DeVry University in North Brunswick.

A native of Rochester, New York, Reed lived in New Jersey for nearly 20 years and served as a faculty member at Kean University and Rutgers University. He earned a doctoral degree in political science from Rutgers in 1997.

Reed is also a recognizable public figure in academia, authoring the popular “Confessions of a Community College Dean” column for trade publication Inside Higher Ed and publishing the book “Confessions of a Community College Administrator” in 2013.

Reed will officially step in for former vice president Dr. Dianna Phillips, who left Brookdale in October to become chief executive officer at the University of the District of Columbia’s Community College.

Dr. Richard Fulton, former vice chancellor for instruction at Windward Community College in Hawaii, served as interim vice president this year as the college conducted a comprehensive national candidate search. Reed was selected from a pool of finalists in May, and his appointment was approved by the Brookdale Board of Trustees on May 19.

Reed will start at the college on July 16 with an annual salary of $155,000.

“I am very excited to join Brookdale and help making a strong college even stronger,” said Reed. “I’m looking forward to getting to work.”

Reed will help lead the college at it implements a comprehensive reorganization plan for the 2015-16 school year. Beginning this summer, Brookdale will roll out new academic institutes and student service divisions designed to create clearer pathways to graduation and the workforce. Leadership teams for those divisions were announced earlier this year.
