Shift Lead – 2nd Shift (Welder or Machinist)

Shift: Monday to Friday, 4:00 PM – 12:30 AM

Job Type: Full-Time | Onsite | Non-Exempt

Reports To: Chief Operating Officer

Pay Rate: $40 – $47 / hour (plus overtime)

Position Summary: The Shift Lead plays a critical role in building and leading a high-performing second shift team across machining and welding operations. This position requires hands-on expertise in CNC machining and/or welding combined with strong leadership abilities. The Lead will oversee the production of precision components—such as base plates, cam followers, load plates, studs, wheels, and assemblies—ensuring all meet exact tolerances, quality standards, and production goals.

Job Responsibilities

-Supervise and lead 2nd shift personnel including CNC machinists, manual machinists, and welders; delegate tasks, provide training, and support performance.

-Coordinate machining and welding operations to maintain production flow and throughput, stepping in during first-shift leadership absences.

-Interpret technical drawings and work orders; program, set up tooling, and verify machine and welding parameters for each job.

-Troubleshoot machine and welding equipment issues; optimize cutting and welding processes to ensure first-pass quality.

-Conduct in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments and welding gauges; verify adherence to engineering specifications and weld quality standards.

-Perform machine and welding setups, tool and electrode changes, and confirm program accuracy prior to production.

-Accurately record labor hours and job data using shop floor software; ensure timely submission.

-Identify and report discrepancies or defective materials to the Production Manager.

-Enforce company safety protocols and quality standards throughout machining and welding operations.

-Maintain cleanliness and readiness of equipment and work areas.

Qualifications

-Minimum 4–6 years of experience in CNC machining or welding within a precision manufacturing environment.

-Demonstrated experience in machine programming, welding procedures, setups, and inspection.

-Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a machine shop or welding production environment.

-Proficient in reading blueprints, GD&T, welding symbols, and technical specifications.

-Strong decision-making, troubleshooting, and workflow management skills under limited supervision.

-Familiarity with manufacturing documentation, quality control, and continuous improvement principles.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

-Standing for extended periods; occasional walking, bending, and kneeling.

-Ability to lift and move parts and equipment over 50 lbs.

-Frequent exposure to loud noise, metalworking fluids, welding fumes, and airborne particles.

-Mandatory use of PPE including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and welding masks.

Equipment and Tools Used (machining or welding experience required):

-CNC vertical/horizontal mills and lathes, manual machining tools

-Welding equipment (MIG, TIG, stick, etc.)

-Forklifts, overhead cranes, pallet jacks

Digital and analog measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, welding gauges):

-Shop floor data collection systems
