Uniform Construction Code Education Program
The community colleges listed below are offering a regional schedule of classes for Uniform Construction Code training:
- Brookdale Community College
- Mercer County College
- Middlesex County College
- Union County College
These classes are for general contractors who are looking to advance their careers and become New Jersey State Inspectors for local municipalities. They are open to anyone with an interest in construction and mandatory for those desiring licensure in building, electrical, elevator, fire protection, plumbing, and administrative licensure in sub code official, construction official, and technical assistance. The courses focus on technical needs for contractors, estimators, architects, engineers, and government officials as they relate to the design, construction, and maintenance of building structures. Courses are approved for licensure by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) pursuant to NJAC 5:23-5.20 and must be taken in the proper sequence (RCS-ICS-HHS). Licensing application packets and related inquiries should be directed to the DCA Licensing Unit at 609-984-7834. It is recommended to review this packet before undertaking a course. Students who successfully complete a course and apply for licensing may be refunded up to 100% of tuition by submitting a license number or log number to the college they attend. Students should direct licensing questions and request a licensing application packet by contacting the Licensing Unit at (609) 984-7834. Please review the licensing application packet prior to taking the course. Tuition reimbursement may be available. Click here to view the UCC updates on the DCA website. Courses are live remote format and students must have a computer with camera and microphone, and a valid email address. Please note: after successfully completing the required courses, contractors also need to pass National Exams.

This course prepares Uniform Construction Code Subcode Officials to become the chief administrator of a Local Enforcing Agency. The course reviews pertinent laws, departmental administration, documentation, personnel management, budgeting, and interfacing with other governmental agencies, pursuant to N.J.A.C. 5:23-5.20(o). 45 hours.

This is the entry-level course for future Uniform Construction Code fire protection inspectors. Content includes New Jersey regulations, concentrating on fire sprinklers, fire alarm systems, and enforcement of the International Residential Code and International Building Codes, pursuant to N.J.A.C. 5:23-5.20(i). The required textbooks will be announced in the course syllabus 120 hours.

Content includes New Jersey regulations, plan review, plus International Fuel Gas and International Mechanical Code regulations, pursuant to N.J.A.C. 5:23-5.20(j). This course prepares Uniform Construction Code inspectors to become middle level supervisors of their respective trades. Subcode Officials learn administrative code and upon state licensure become responsible for plan review and releasing construction permits, issuing notices of violation and penalties, pursuant to N.J.A.C. 5:23-5.20(n). 45 hours.

Technical Assistant
This administrative seminar is designed for all building department personnel who are looking to receive their State Certification as a Technical Assistant to the Construction Official. All participants will benefit by learning the construction fundamentals of the Uniform Construction Code. Various topics are discussed in detail and explained. Participants will have a much clearer and concise idea of the administrative process for each topic reviewed which is the basis for all construction departments. References to the Uniform Construction Code will be interjected as required. 45 hours. 15 SESSIONS.
