Spanish Communication — Level 1 (Online, Asynchronous)

This communicative online language course is designed to help you begin your study of Spanish and build a strong foundation for real-world communication. You’ll develop basic language skills through practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with a focus on meaningful language use and cross-cultural understanding.

The course outcomes are aligned with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) World-Readiness Standards, supporting your ability to engage in simple conversations, explore cultural perspectives, and use Spanish to connect with others in everyday contexts. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to communicate about familiar topics, recognize cultural differences, and participate in basic conversations with confidence.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Have simple conversations in Spanish about topics like family and school using basic vocabulary and grammar.
• Describe cultural practices from Spanish-speaking countries and compare them to your own.
• Use Spanish to explore ideas in other subjects, like geography, math, or social studies.
• Notice how Spanish and English grammar and vocabulary are different.
• Use Basic Spanish to connect with others in class or in the community where you live.
