Spanish Communication – Level 1 (Online, Asynchronous)

8 Weeks

This communicative online language course is designed to help you begin your study of Spanish and build a strong foundation for real-world communication. You’ll develop basic language skills through practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with a focus on meaningful language use and cross-cultural understanding.

The course outcomes are aligned with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) World-Readiness Standards, supporting your ability to engage in simple conversations, explore cultural perspectives, and use Spanish to connect with others in everyday contexts. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to communicate about familiar topics, recognize cultural differences, and participate in basic conversations with confidence.

Lesson 1 - Hola, ¿qué tal?

In this lesson, you will learn how to introduce yourself and others, greet people formally and informally, and say goodbye. You’ll practice asking and answering simple questions about names and origins, and telling time. By the end, you’ll be able to start a basic conversation in Spanish and understand common greetings in various Spanish-speaking cultures.

Lesson 1 of the Beginner Spanish Communication course is part of a 40-hour requirement completed over 8 weeks.

Lesson 2 - En la universidad

This lesson focuses on how to talk about your classes and daily routines. You’ll learn how to discuss subjects, schedules, days of the week, and classroom objects. You’ll also learn to ask and answer questions about location using common expressions. By the end, you’ll be able to describe your academic life and ask for basic information in Spanish.

Lesson 3 - La familia

In this lesson, you’ll talk about your family and friends, describe people and professions, and express possession. You’ll learn key vocabulary and structures to identify relationships and describe people using adjectives. By the end of the lesson, you’ll be able to introduce family members and describe them using simple sentences.
