Brookdale as a First Step to Becoming an Addictions Counselor

Addictions Studies is an evolving field in which counselors work to support people who are experiencing problems with addiction, thereby helping to improve – and save – lives.  Whether seeing clients who are addicted to a specific substance or working with a specific population, you can make a difference every day! If you are a good listener, patient with others, and compassionate in helping people confront – and solve – their problems, you may have a fulfilling future as an addictions counselor.

Brookdale’s Addictions Studies Program is designed as the first step on this path. Our program is a blend of classroom courses and 285 hours of clinical experience, which can be undertaken in hospitals, clinics, mental health centers, and social service agencies. Once you earn your Human Services A.S. Degree in Addictions Studies, you will have fulfilled the academic requirements for the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) credential awarded by the State of New Jersey. For more information on this credential, visit Certbd.org.

Employment Outlook for Addictions Counselors

Employment of addictions counselors is projected to grow 23 percent from 2020 to 2030, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment growth is expected as people continue to seek addiction and mental health counseling. New Jersey is the 4th highest paying state in this field with a 2022 mean salary of $50,100. The NY-NJ Metropolitan area employs more counselors than any other part of the US.  For more information, visit: Bureau of Labor Statistics – Addictions Counselors
