What is on the placement test?

The placement test includes multiple choice questions on listening comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar and a written portion comprised of short-answer essay questions.

How am I placed in an ESL level?

After your placement test, you will need to make an appointment for an oral interview. At the interview, your test results will be reviewed and you will be placed into the appropriate classes for your level. (The placement test is free, but you will need to pay $25 to apply to Brookdale.)

What if I don't have enough English to start the academic ESL program?

You will be directed to Brookdale’s free, non-academic ESL program (732-224-2180).

Is this program for students interested in teaching ESL?

No. Our program teaches English to second language learners. It is not for those who want to teach ESL.

How much is tuition?

Can I get financial aid?

ESL students can receive financial aid. For information on financial aid, go to Financial Aid.

You may qualify for the Educational Opportunity Fund – EOF.

By when must I register?

Students may register until the second week of classes based on availability. Please note sections may fill early and a seat is not guaranteed. The sooner you register, the better. Late fees will apply if register late. See the Academic Calendar for specific dates.

What is Early Registration?

During April students can register for the upcoming Fall semester, and during November, students can register for the upcoming Spring semester. It is a good idea to pre-register during these periods because there are usually no lines and more available courses you can choose from.

Which Brookdale location offers Academic ESL classes?

Academic ESL classes are only offered at the Lincroft campus.

Do ESL courses count for college credit?

ESL courses do not count in the total number of credits required for graduation. Only ESL 103 and 104 do.

Do ESL courses affect a student's GPA?

ESL courses that begin with a zero do not affect a student’s GPA. Only ESL 103 and ESL 104 do.

What happens if I fail a course?

If you receive a D or F in an ESL course, you will not be able to continue to the next level. Please speak with the ESL Administrator in Larrison Hall, Room 232, to proceed.

Can I take classes in the evening?

Yes, we offer day and evening sections of our required classes. Please use the ‘Search for Classes’ feature on Brookdale’s main page for details.

Can I take courses while taking ESL courses?

You may start taking other courses while still in the ESL program. When and which courses will depend on your level. Please speak with the ESL Administrator in Larrison Hall, Room 232 to learn more.

May I study part-time?

We offer part-time and full-time schedules. Students who study full-time will need to take 12 credits.

Where can I buy my textbook?

You can buy or rent your textbook at the College Bookstore located on the main Lincroft campus, in the Warner Student Life Center. Use Parking Lot #7. Some discounts are available if you purchase online through the publisher website. Ask for details when you register.

How can I check out books at the library?

You will need to get a student ID card in order to take books home. To obtain your ID card, bring your registration receipt and a photo ID to the CAR building, Room 222.

Is there public transportation to Brookdale?

Please visit NJ Transit for train and bus schedules.

Brookdale has partnered with NJ Transit to offer student discounts on monthly passes. Full-time students only riding NJ Transit rail and bus can save 25% and avoid the hassle of finding parking. To purchase a discounted NJ Transit ticket, log into Web Advisor and click on the link under the student section. Your student pass will be mailed to you monthly.
