Foundational Studies Math

Foundational Studies courses at Brookdale are courses specifically developed to prepare adult learners for college level course work. The foundational studies math courses are pre-requisites for math, science, business, culinary, automotive, and other college level courses. Math skills, as well as technical and critical thinking and writing skills, are addressed in our math foundational studies courses.

Placement Testing:

Brookdale Community College requires an ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning (ALEKS PPL) Assessment to determine readiness for mathematics courses. ALEKS PPL is a web-based program that uses artificial intelligence to map your strengths and weaknesses. The Placement Assessment is up to 30 questions and generally takes 60-90 minutes to complete. After the Placement Assessment, an individualized Prep and Learning Module is available for you to refresh your knowledge on forgotten topics. You then have the opportunity to reassess and improve your placement. For more information about the ALEKS Math Placement Test, please click here.

ALEKS consists of two parts:

1. An Initial Placement Assessment
2. The Prep and Learning Module, an individualized, self-paced online review

ALEKS score of 30+ waives Foundational courses

0-13 and need READ 091 = MATH 011

0-13 no READ = MATH 015

14-29 = MATH 021 (non-STEM) or MATH  025 (STEM)

30- 100 = MATH 131, 136, 145 (non-STEM)

35-45 = MATH 151 (STEM)

46-60=MATH 152 or 156

61-100= MATH 176

76-100=MATH 171 (Calculus)

MATH 011 – Prealgebra, Part 1

MATH 012 – Prealgebra, Part 2

MATH 015 – Prealgebra
Students have 3 options of delivery for Prealgebra. The Prealgebra course is offered:

• Over two semesters with the MATH 011 and MATH 012 sequence. Each course in this sequence is taught in a classroom where students meet with an instructor twice a week for the full term.
• In one semester in MATH 015, a course that meets in a classroom with an instructor twice a week for the full term.
• In a self-paced format of MATH 015, in which students meet in a computer classroom with an instructor and work at an individual pace with guidance from the instructor and the aid of computer software. Students have the opportunity to complete the course more quickly.

MATH 025 – Elementary Algebra
Students have 3 options of delivery for Elementary Algebra. Elementary Algebra is offered as MATH 025:

• In one semester, a course that meets in a classroom with an instructor twice a week for the full term.
• In a hybrid format in one semester, a course that meets in a classroom with an instructor once a week and online once a week for the full term. Assignments are completed both online and on campus.
• In an online format in one semester, a course that has one in-person introductory meeting at the beginning of the semester and the remainder of the course is online. Students take tests in a proctored setting.
